Bunks Across America Bed Build Event
Join us for our annual Bunks Across America event on September 12th 8:30AM-2:30PM & September 13th 8:30 AM - 4:30 PM.
She Built This City is proud to serve as the first Charlotte–NE Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP), a nonprofit dedicated to building beds for children in need. We will host our annual Bunks Across America event on September 12 (8:30 AM–2:30 PM) and September 13 (8:30 AM–4:30 PM) at 509 River Hwy, Mooresville, NC.
This two-day event will unite volunteers, community partners, and local businesses with a bold goal: build 200 beds in just 48 hours for children in Charlotte and Iredell who currently have no bed of their own.
We are proud to be partnering with the Iredell Chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace, who have been instrumental in supporting our Charlotte Chapter since its launch. Their collaboration and leadership are key to ensuring the success of this year’s event.
Our SHP chapters have a growing waitlist of children in need, many sleeping on couches, sharing crowded beds, or even on the floor. A safe, comfortable bed is essential to their health, development, and well-being, and together, SHP is committed to meeting this urgent need.
The event will feature bed building, a welcome address from a community leader, music by a DJ, snacks, and plenty of opportunities for volunteers and media to capture inspiring stories of families and children impacted by SHP’s mission.
Our volunteers are everyday heroes who prove that ordinary people can do extraordinary things. They come from all walks of life, and they share one thing in common: they refuse to accept that any child in our community should sleep on the floor.
All children deserve a safe, comfortable place to lay their heads.

Build With Us
We’re always looking for volunteers to help build bunks, deliver beds, and spread the word about our mission. Volunteering with Sleep in Heavenly Peace is more than just working with wood — it’s hands-on service that changes lives.
You’ll learn to use tools like saws, drills, and sanders, practice skills like measuring and leveling, and get to sand, stain, and even brand the beds you create. And the best part? Knowing the bunk you built will give a child their very first safe, comfortable place to sleep.
