ABCs of Construction: A Month of Opportunity, Awareness & Action
In honor of Careers in Construction Month, this October, SBTC is launching our ABCs of Construction campaign.
26 Letters, 26 Careers
Our goal is simple. Expand awareness, break down barriers, and offer inspiration to people who might never have considered a career in trades or building.
Why THIS Campaign?
When the average Joe thinks of “construction,” their minds often jump straight to electricians, painters, and that person who fixed your AC that one summer. But “construction” is much more vast. Equipment operators, safety officers, estimators, urban planners, and the list goes on! By going through the ABCs together, SBTC gets to highlight both “mainstream” and less visible roles. Roles that just might be a perfect fit for the skills, talent, and background of our readers.
Why does it matter though? Construction and skills within trades are still weighted down by traditional norms. Too often they are seen as “blue colored” tasks, or as a fallback option rather than a rewarding career path. At SBTC, our mission has always been to dismantle those barriers, create community through inclusivity, and change the narrative. This month, the spotlight will be on the impact of construction careers, shifting the traditional lens to the youth, women, and marginalized communities.
At the same time, the construction industry is facing real labor shortages, especially in skilled trades. Many talented people are sidelined because they do not see themselves reflected in those fields or do not know how to break those barriers. SBTC’s adult workforce programs includes a 9-week pre-apprenticeship and 2-year Facilities Maintenance Technician apprenticeship program. These programs were designed to help erase those access barriers.
Our hope for this campaign is not just to spark interest, but also guide people towards our programs, partner employers, and future career exploration. Be creative, curious, and always learn.

Why it matters (beyond reviewing the ABCs together for a month)
Sometimes, the largest hurdles to overcome are the invisible ones. Not knowing the option exists, believing a career path “isn’t for me,” or lacking a visible model to follow. The ABCs campaign helps make that invisible visible. It shows that construction isn’t just for one group of people; there is room for everyone. Creative, strategic thinkers, builders, project managers, and so much more. At She Built This City, we already work to spark interest and build pathways to lucrative careers in the skilled trades for youth, women, and marginalized communities. This campaign is an extension of that. To build awareness, effort, and connection. By the end of October, we hope you’ll walk away thinking differently about construction, seeing it not just as a “job that builds stuff” but as a career that builds our futures.
So, my friend, what letter are you most curious about? What job have you NEVER heard of, and might want to learn more about? Follow along, ask questions, be curious, share your review of your ABCS with She Built This City, and let’s expand what’s possible together.
